I needed to slow down ripening and every leaf o the vine is a sugar producing factory so then I would be ripening too fast. Billo noted “Around July 20th I was tracking the heat units and at that time I went to the vineyard managements and I hedged the canopy by 30%, and they were all surprised. The Bordeaux style wines all showed bright acidity despite the obvious heat of the vintage. We didn’t want to add any acid to the wines because we handed things in the vineyard so well.” ![]() Even though this was one of our warmest years, we were able to get some really good acidity in the wine. Billo has said that “2016 we cut the canopy back to slow the ripening and get good acidity. I loved these wines, mostly from the warm 2016 vintage, across the board. The wines he crafts show tremendous texture, richness, poise and terroir - and are only getting better by each vintage. He is now one of the few masters of wine (MW) in the world. With a bachelor’s degree from MIT and a master’s degree from Stanford, Billo then studied viticulture an enology at UC Davis. I was absolutely mesmerized by the seamless quality of the wine. Finally, he and his brother, Pinto, made the bold decision to start Rasa Vineyards in 2007. My first exposure to these great wines was many years back when I was served a 2007 Rasa Vineyards ‘QED’ Syrah blind. During that time Billo was exposed to some of the finest wines in the world and he fully caught the wine bug. His new lineup of wines is truly one of the best in the state - from crisp Rieslings to inky Syrahs.īillo Naravane initially was inspired by wine while working in the computer world and living Austin, Texas. Pinto has been in the Computer Industry for more than two decades including 19 years as Founder and Chief of Operations for Plexus Technologies, a computer networking company. The Naravane brothers formed Rasa Vineyards in 2007 with the goal of producing ultra-premium, terroir specific wines. ![]() Pinto and Billo took the plunge to go completely native in the wild, cut throat world of wine making.
